Highest-Paid Pitcher Of All Time Manages To Keep Team In Game

The New York Yankees signed pitcher C.C. Sabathia to a seven-year, 161 million dollar contract this offseason, making him the highest paid pitcher in baseball history. The record deal paid dividends on Thursday night, as Sabathia, in a herculean effort, was barely able to keep his team in the game against the Seattle Mariners.

"He just goes out there to work every fifth day, and does the absolute bare minimum to keep us in the game," catcher Francisco Cervelli told reporters in the locker room after the 4-8 loss. "It's amazing to see him out there, confusing signs, lazily jogging to cover first base, lobbing meatballs over the middle of the plate. He's a Cy Young winner, so he must know what he's doing."

C.C. pitched six mediocre innings before being pulled by manager Joe Girardi after loading the bases on three straight walks. In that time, he gave up six earned runs on ten hits and the aforementioned walks. When asked what happened after the game, he admitted that he was "simply too tired to try and strike them out," so he just put them on base "to let the relievers deal with it."

When asked whether the Yankees regret paying so much money to Sabathia, who is under contract until the end of the 2016 season, General Manager Brian Cashman was adamant. "Look, we signed him to be the highest-paid pitcher in baseball, and that's exactly what he is."
